L'inspiration est à la base de toute création artistique. Elle est personnelle et puise dans l'expérience de chacun. Pour Richard, tout est inspiration; la musique, la littérature sont pour lui des aides précieuses dans la création d'une atmosphère ou d'un sujet de peinture. L'œuvre existe déjà lorsqu'il prend le pinceau et la traduit sur papier. Peindre c'est aussi un métier qui exige un certain apprentissage. L'artiste, le véritable artiste, c'est celui qui est constamment en éveil, qui cherche partout, à toute heure une émotion à traduire en peinture. Où qu'il aille, il est aux aguets. Peindre, c'est aussi contester, affirmer sa liberté de penser. C'est refuser les « on doit » ou « il faut ». On peut dénoncer les injustices sociales de différentes manières. Pour Richard, contester, c'est peindre sa vision personnelle au risque d'être « politically incorrect »

Inspiration is the basis of all artistic creation; it is embedded within each of us. Everything is inspirational for Richard, but most of all, music and literature are key elements where atmosphere and the subject of the painting co-exist together.
